Why taking animals into account is good for you
and it’s not for activists, it’s for everyone
Who really thinks that the current treatment of non-human animals is alright in every way? Who is OK with factory farming and animal abuse?
I am not judging my readers, nor am I demanding anybody goes vegan here. I’d like to suggest taking animals into account. It feels good to enlarge your circle of compassion, to acknowledge modern science and how other animals can suffer too, physically and mentally.
Taking animals into account feels good because you know you’re doing the right thing, caring about others — and it doesn’t have to cost you more than you’re willing to spare.
Most people think that the meat they’re eating is happy meat because “it” got to run around in paddocks. Look, generally speaking it’s true that it’s not as bad. I wouldn’t eat it because it means treating animals as commodities and they all go to the same slaughterhouse in the end but I appreciate the thought. It’s unfortunate that the pizzas, the meat pies, the take aways and many other dishes we eat have plenty of meat in it which comes from factory farms and the likes. This meat could so easily be replaced with a plant based equivalent.
This 9 minute video is an awesome, non-militant, non-judgemental and not-pushy piece and it explains the idea behind animalism with reason and clarity:
- You can stop eating chickens. “It takes over 200 chickens to provide the same number of meals as one cow. While beef consumption has fallen over the decades, chicken consumption has risen significantly. After a few years of decline, chicken consumption in the US is currently at an all-time high and continuing to move higher, despite all advocacy efforts.”
- You may consider reducetarianism? Reducetarians are “individuals who are committed to eating less meat — red meat, poultry, and seafood — as well as less dairy and fewer eggs, regardless of the degree or motivation. This concept is appealing because not everyone is willing to follow an “all-or-nothing” diet. However, reducetarianism is still inclusive of vegans, vegetarians, and anyone else who reduces the amount of animal products in their diet.”
- You could include animal charities when you make donations. Animal Charity Evaluators’ mission is to find and promote the most effective ways to help animals. To do this, they analyse research on methods of helping animals in order to provide research about interventions and top-charity recommendations. They offer advice for effective animal advocacy and provide career, charity, and volunteering suggestions.
- You can find plenty of tips on going animal friendly with a quick google search but I recommend Mercy For Animals’ starter guide, or contacting a friendly animal charity in your country for tips. :)
The following memes were made to encourage everyone to take a step forward. I hope some may speak to you and if you want to share them, go ahead. I am also including a Facebook link below each one in case it helps. Cheers and have a lovely, animal friendly day!
